Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Ebola virus disease, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Muhammad Pate announced at a media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
Pate said the patient is a woman who returned from Uganda on October 7 with symptoms. Her condition worsened four days later, and laboratory tests then confirmed the infection. A government statement said she was admitted to a private hospital, where she received care for several days before the diagnosis.
She is now in isolation and receiving treatment. Contact tracing has begun, with 44 contacts identified, and surveillance has been strengthened at Nigeria’s entry points.
The Ministry of Health, the FCT Health Secretariat and the Africa CDC are working together to contain the spread. Pate urged public and private health facilities to stay on high alert and keep a high index of suspicion for possible cases.
He asked Nigerians to stay calm, practise good hygiene, watch for symptoms such as fever, weakness, headache and diarrhoea, and cooperate with health officials. The government promised timely and transparent updates.
