Nigeria enjoys golden day at Glasgow 2026 as Nwachukwu breaks world record, Enekwechi makes history

Nigeria’s athletics team produced one of its finest showings at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday, with Goodness Nwachukwu breaking her own world record to retain her title, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi winning a historic first Commonwealth gold in the men’s shot put, and Tobi Amusan claiming bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles despite injury.

Para-athlete Nwachukwu produced a final-round throw of 39.66 metres to break her own world record and defend her women’s F42 discus title. The 27-year-old, who first made her mark at the Birmingham 2022 Games by breaking the world record twice, improved her previous best by more than three metres to record her fourth career world record.

She led from the first round, finishing ahead of Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye (38.52m) and Bree Cronin (36.00m), who took silver and bronze respectively. “I feel like I am on top of the world. I feel so great. I feel so wow,” Nwachukwu said afterwards, thanking Nigerians for their support.

Enekwechi became the first Nigerian to win the Commonwealth Games men’s shot put title, throwing 21.07 metres at Scotstoun Stadium. The African record holder’s penultimate-round effort moved him ahead of defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand (21.03m), with England’s Scott Lincoln taking bronze on 20.99 metres. The win improves on Enekwechi’s 2018 silver and follows a fourth-place finish in Birmingham in 2022.

The 33-year-old, a five-time African champion, holds the continental shot put record. Amusan, competing with a knee injury sustained during Team Nigeria’s training camp in Aberdeen, finished in 12.60 seconds to take bronze in the 100m hurdles — her third consecutive Commonwealth Games medal in the event, following gold in Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022.

The 29-year-old narrowly missed becoming the first athlete to win three straight Commonwealth titles in the event but fought through the injury to secure a podium finish.
