Thursday, October 1, 2026, has been declared a public holiday by the Federal Government to celebrate the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.

The announcement was made on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued on Wednesday by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.

Extending his congratulations to Nigerians both domestically and in the diaspora, Tunji-Ojo encouraged citizens to reflect the values of unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect during the celebration. He highlighted that peace and stability serve as vital foundations for national progress, urging the public to honor the country by following the patriotic example set by Nigeria’s founding fathers.

“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.

Furthermore, the minister reiterated the Federal Government’s dedication to boosting national security, enhancing public safety, and fostering an environment where every citizen can confidently live, work, and pursue their goals. He emphasized that the administration remains focused on delivering a better Nigeria through its Renewed Hope Agenda, while again urging the populace to reaffirm their devotion to peace and national unity during the holiday.
