Nigerian woman calls for ban on DNA paternity testing, says it is destroying marriages

A Nigerian woman has called for DNA paternity testing to be banned, arguing that it is contributing to the breakdown of marriages and families.

In a video shared on X, she questioned why married men would test children born within their marriages if they trusted their wives. She argued that a husband should accept any child born during the marriage as his, whether or not the wife was unfaithful.

“Whether a woman cheats or not, so far you’re married to her, any child she brings under your roof is automatically yours,” she said.

She added that a man who insists on a test clearly does not trust his wife, and asked why he married her in the first place. “Let them ban DNA. Ban DNA. DNA is destroying marriages. It’s destroying homes,” she said.

She also noted that earlier generations did not use DNA tests. “Our forefathers did not conduct DNA. Any child that was born under their roof is their child automatically,” she said. She suggested infidelity can sometimes be a mistake that a woman regrets but hides out of fear of her husband’s reaction. A husband who wants a peaceful marriage, she said, has no reason to run a test.

Her comments have sparked debate online over paternity, trust, infidelity and whether DNA testing strengthens or threatens relationships.
