The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to carefully assess the promises made by politicians before deciding who to vote for in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Monday when he received the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Campaign Council, led by Director-General Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar, at his palace in Sokoto, the Sultan also cautioned politicians against politicising insecurity and other national challenges in their campaigns.
He urged parties and candidates to focus on issues that would promote peace, unity and development, and to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns that respect the choices of the electorate.
The Sultan noted that no government anywhere in the world could completely eradicate insecurity and poverty, but that governments could work to reduce their effects on the people. He wished the campaign council success and prayed for continued peace, stability and good governance in Nigeria.
Earlier, Yari said the delegation had come to seek the Sultan’s guidance and prayers ahead of the 2027 elections, citing President Bola Tinubu’s record of supporting development initiatives even before becoming president. He said the APC-led Federal Government had several achievements to its credit and assured the Sultan the party would campaign peacefully.
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, said the campaign had begun nationwide in line with INEC’s timetable, adding that the council prioritised an early visit to the Sultan given his role as spiritual leader of the Muslim Ummah.
Other delegation members included Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, Senators Aliyu Wamakko, Adamu Aliero and Ali Modu Sheriff, former Katsina governor Aminu Masari, and former APC chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.
