Let’s Talk About Emotional RegulationHello, my dear teens! ( And anyone else reading this). Today we’re discussing something everyone of us deals with, whether we admit it or not: big feelings.

Picture this. You open your exam result, and it’s not what you hoped for. Your chest tightens, and your face gets hot. In that moment, you could slam the door, snap at your little sister, or smile and say “I’m fine” while you’re breaking inside.

All three are reactions. None of them is regulation.

First, feelings are not the enemy.Anger, sadness, jealousy, fear and excitement are normal. They’re signals, like the low-battery warning on your phone. The warning isn’t the problem. It’s telling you something needs attention before you shut down.

Nobody gets to choose whether a feeling shows up, but you can choose what you do with it. Your job isn’t to silence the signal. It’s to listen to it and respond wisely.

So what is emotional regulation?

It’s the skill of feeling something without letting it control you. You notice the feeling, understand it a little, and then decide how to respond.

Two extremes to avoid

– Bottling up. You swallow everything and say nothing. It looks calm, but the feelings don’t disappear. They pile up and come out as headaches, a short temper, or sudden tears over something small.

– Exploding. Every feeling goes straight into action: shouting, insulting, sending the angry message. Afterwards, you feel worse, and so does everyone around you.

Regulation sits in the middle. You’re allowed to feel it, and you’re allowed to pause before you act.

Why is this so hard at your age?

First, hear this: there is nothing wrong with you. Your brain is still under construction. The part that feels, the emotional centre, is already fully active. The part that thinks, plans and says “wait, let’s not do that” keeps developing until your mid-twenties. So if your emotions sometimes feel bigger than you, that’s not weakness. It’s biology. The good news is that this skill can be learned, and it grows stronger with practice.

Try this today

The next time a strong feeling hits, pause and ask yourself: “What exactly am I feeling right now?

“Then name it. “I’m disappointed.” “I’m embarrassed.” “I’m angry because I feel disrespected.” Giving a feeling a name helps to calm it. Next week, we’ll add more tools to your toolbox.

Why Start Learning This Now

Exams, friendships, family expectations and social media all stir up strong feelings. The teen who can pause before reacting protects their friendships, their focus and their peace of mind. Learning this early means you’re not just surviving these years; you’re building habits you’ll carry into adulthood.

Question of the weekWhat is one situation that makes it hard for you to stay calm? Send it in, and your question may be featured in our reader Q&A edition.
