‎The Consul-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, Ambassador (Mrs.) Ninikanwa O. Okey-Uche, has delivered a powerful Youth Day message, urging young Nigerians living across South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini to embrace leadership, education and unity despite the challenges they face abroad.
‎
‎In her address marking Youth Day 2026, the Nigerian envoy paid tribute to the courage of South African youth who stood against oppression during the historic Soweto Uprising of 1976, describing the occasion as a reminder of the transformative power of young people.
‎
‎Speaking to Nigerian youth, parents and community leaders across Southern Africa, Ambassador Okey-Uche said the day symbolises hope and serves as a call for young people to reshape societies through positive action.
‎
‎“The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow” is not a cliché, it is a sacred trust and truth. As such, leadership is not a distant horizon, it is forged in the oh-so important choices we make today,” she stated.
‎
‎The Consul-General drew parallels between the sacrifices of South African youth and Nigeria’s own history of struggle, honouring national heroes and generations of young people who fought for independence, democracy and social justice.

‎Addressing Nigerians in the diaspora, she acknowledged the realities many face, including economic hardship, discrimination, xenophobia, homesickness and the pressure to succeed in foreign lands. Despite these challenges, she encouraged them to remain resilient and see every obstacle as an opportunity for growth.
‎
‎“You are ambassadors of our culture – our vibrant music, our indomitable spirit, our entrepreneurial drive, while also navigating new landscapes and building bridges across borders,” she said.
‎
‎The envoy challenged young Nigerians to make education their strongest weapon, uphold integrity, celebrate unity across ethnic and national divides, and reject despair.
‎
‎“Your ancestors never gave up, and neither should you, no matter what,” she added.
‎
‎Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, Ambassador Okey-Uche pledged continued support for youth-focused initiatives, mentorship programmes and platforms that amplify the voices of young Nigerians in Southern Africa.
‎
‎“The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Johannesburg stands with you. We are committed to creating platforms for dialogue, mentorship, and skill-building,” she said.
‎
‎In a stirring conclusion, the Consul-General described Nigerian youth as the heartbeat of the nation abroad and urged them to dream boldly while remaining humble and compassionate.
‎
‎“You are not alone. You are not forgotten. You are the heartbeat of our nation abroad. Carry Nigeria in your heart and let your light shine so brightly that it illuminates the path for others.”
‎
‎She wished young Nigerians a happy Youth Day and prayed that the spirit of resilience, courage and determination that defined the 1976 generation would continue to guide them in their pursuit of excellence.
