Africa to push for greater control of critical minerals at New York summit

Africa is set to intensify its push for greater control of its critical minerals wealth as the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) convenes its Third High-Level Roundtable on Critical Minerals Development in New York on September 21, 2026, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Themed “From Resources to Wealth,” the summit will be chaired by President Bola Tinubu, AMSG’s General Assembly Chairperson, and will gather African leaders, ministers, investors and mining executives.

Despite holding vast reserves of lithium, cobalt, copper and rare earths, Africa still exports most minerals raw. AMSG wants this changed through integrated value chains and stronger continental cooperation.

A key highlight will be the unveiling of the Continental Integration and Economic Assurance Declaration (CIEAD), addressing policy coordination, investment and supply-chain security, alongside a proposed CIEAD Finance Window for mobilising capital.
