Manchester United captain breaks record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne on final dayBruno Fernandes has rewritten the Premier League history books, setting up Patrick Dorgu’s header against Brighton on the final day of the season to register his 21st assist of the campaign — surpassing the previous record of 20 shared by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Manchester City icon Kevin De Bruyne.
The corner that unlocked the deadlock at the Amex Stadium in the 33rd minute gave Fernandes sole ownership of a record that had stood for years, completing a remarkable individual season for the Portuguese midfielder.
The milestone arrived just 24 hours after Fernandes was crowned Premier League Player of the Season — an honour that followed his earlier Football Writers’ Award — making Sunday’s record the crowning moment of an already historic campaign.
Beyond the personal accolades, Fernandes contributed eight league goals alongside his record assists as Manchester United, revitalised under Michael Carrick, climbed to third place and secured Champions League football for next season.
“I want collective awards more than anything,” Fernandes said ahead of the final day. “But knowing that your job is being recognised by many people — a lot of players came out and said I was player of the season — for that I am very grateful.”
