Ebola deaths top 500 in DR Congo as frontline Health workers threaten strike

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a deepening healthcare crisis as the death toll from its latest Ebola outbreak has surpassed 500, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The emergency is escalating as frontline medical staff threaten to strike over unpaid wages and hazardous working conditions.

The Latest Figures

Data compiled from Congolese health authorities and published in a July 4 WHO situation report indicates at least 506 deaths and 1,561 confirmed cases of Ebola within the country. Meanwhile, neighboring Uganda has kept its numbers stable at two deaths and 20 confirmed cases.

This current epidemic, officially declared on May 15, marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo. This specific wave is driven by the rare Bundibugyo virus strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or standard treatment.

A Complicated Medical Response

Clinical Trials: The WHO recently announced the launch of a clinical trial evaluating two experimental treatments for this rare strain, alongside granting emergency authorization for a new molecular diagnostic test.

Tracking Challenges: Health officials have yet to locate “patient zero” and still face the monumental task of tracing tens of thousands of potential contacts.

Severity: The WHO previously noted that the first month of this outbreak was the most severe on record.

Over the past 50 years, Ebola has claimed more than 15,000 lives across Africa, with the DR Congo’s deadliest outbreak occurring between 2018 and 2020, resulting in nearly 2,300 fatalities.

Regional Impacts and Labor Unrest

In the Ituri province mining town of Mongbwalu, believed to be the origin point of the epidemic, the mortality rate stands at a high 50.7 percent, highlighting significant gaps in early patient management and access to care.

Compounding the medical emergency, local health workers issued a formal warning to the government threatening to strike.

According to a notice obtained by the AP news agency, both hospital and field workers have not received their promised benefits since the outbreak began. Their grievances include:

Poor base salaries and unpaid hazard benefits.

A critical shortage of adequate medical supplies and protective equipment.

The “arrogance” of response teams sent from the capital city of Kinshasa.

A lack of prioritization for local labor in Ituri, pointing to an excessive reliance on workers brought in from other provinces.

Conflict Zones and Varying Mortality Rates

The virus has also spread into North Kivu and South Kivu, regions heavily impacted by conflict where the anti-government armed group M23 controls major territories and provincial capitals.
In North Kivu, health officials describe the situation as “worrying” due to a steep mortality rate of 57.4 percent, which is significantly higher than the average.

Conversely, South Kivu has not seen a new confirmed case since May 26, leading rebel-aligned health authorities to declare last week that the epidemic has been successfully eradicated in their controlled zones.
