IG of police ordered to produce fake DG within 48 hours over ₦1.32bn phantom agency

The House of Representatives Committee probing the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to produce the self-styled Director-General of the outfit, Adeyemi Adeniyi, before lawmakers within 48 hours.

The directive was issued on Monday during the committee’s resumed hearing at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, as lawmakers deepened their probe into the alleged agency, which reportedly obtained office space at the Federal Secretariat Complex and got a ₦1.32 billion allocation in the 2026 Appropriation Act despite having no legal existence.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Bashir Abdullahi, representing the IG, was directed to ensure Adeyemi appears before the panel by noon on Wednesday.Committee chairman Yusuf Gagdi said the appearance was now non-negotiable given the weight of the allegations. “People’s names are involved. People’s integrity are involved. Institutional names are involved,” he said, adding that the committee needed Adeyemi to confirm documents without compromising the investigation.

The clerk was directed to formally notify the IG of the resolution compelling Adeyemi’s presentation by noon Wednesday. ACP Abdullahi told the panel that police had already filed an eight-count charge against Adeyemi before the Federal High Court following an investigation launched late last year, and that Adeyemi had been arrested and arraigned. He declined to give further details, citing the need not to prejudice the ongoing case.

Police confirmed receiving petitions from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President alleging that Adeyemi falsely claimed to head both the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and the PFIPC. Investigators say he used the fictitious office to secure Federal Secretariat accommodation, sought approval to recruit about 300 staff, attempted to secure a $1.3 billion allocation in the 2026 budget, and planned a World Investment Summit under the council’s name.

A comparison of signatures on documents purportedly from the Chief of Staff’s office against verified correspondence found they did not match. Gagdi said this deepened suspicions that government documents had been forged, noting investigators had identified about 29 allegedly forged documents, including fake approvals attributed to the State House, the Head of Service, the SGF’s office and the Finance Ministry — all of which the affected agencies have since disowned.

The committee resumes its probe on Wednesday, when Adeyemi is expected to appear.
