Spain are world champions for the second time after Ferran Torres struck in the 106th minute to beat holders Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Sunday. The victory ends Lionel Messi’s hopes of a second World Cup crown in what is likely his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Torres finished emphatically after Pedro Porro’s cross was headed into his path by Nico Williams, capping a match in which Argentina never managed a shot on target across 120 minutes. Argentina’s frustration boiled over late on, with midfielder Enzo Fernandez sent off in injury time for a dangerous challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

A crowd of 80,663, including US President Donald Trump, watched Spain add to their maiden 2010 triumph while Messi, now 39, was largely nullified throughout
